 Study Skills & Strategies (3S)

3S is a comprehensive interactive online study skills program, developed by Study Skills Plus, a division of Mangrum-Strichart Learning Resources. It is appropriate for students in high school through college. The program is hosted on our server and requires only that the user have access to the Internet.

3S has three major components:

Component A - Assessment. Students take the assessment to evaluate their instructional needs in the study skills and strategies taught in the program.

Component B - Instruction. Students work through the interactive instruction to gain mastery of the study skills and strategies covered in the program.

Component C - Management. Teachers, tutors, and other education professionals use the management system to monitor the progress of individual students, groups of students, and classes.

Here are the five areas of study skills and strategies covered in 3S:

Unit 1: Studying Effectively
Students learn to use effective study habits, how to organize an appropriate study place, and how to plan and manage their study time through the use of a Semester Calendar, Weekly Schedule, and Daily To Do List.

Unit 2: Remembering Information
Students learn to use seven strategies for remembering information found in their textbooks and heard in class lectures: repetition, acronyms, abbreviations, acronymic sentences, pegwords, keywords, and rhymes.

Unit 3: Reading and Taking Notes from Textbooks
Students learn to use the SQ5R strategy for reading and taking notes from textbooks. SQ5R includes the following steps: Survey, Question and wRite, Read and wRite, Remember and Review.

Unit 4: Taking Notes in Class
Students learn to use the FLQ5R strategy for taking notes in class. FLQ5R includes the following steps: Format, Listen, Question and wRite, Revise, Reformat, Remember and Review.

Unit 5: Preparing For and Taking Tests
Students learn effective strategies for taking the five types of tests most frequently given by teachers: multiple-choice, true/false, matching, completion, and essay.
