OBJECTIVES:

When reading and taking notes from a chapter in a textbook:

the student reads the title to learn what the chapter is about.

the student reads the introduction to learn what the chapter is about.

the student reads the summary or conclusion to learn what the chapter is about.

the student changes each heading into a question and writes the question in his/her notes.

the student uses the words who, what, where, why, or how to form questions.

the student reads to find answers to the questions.

the student writes answers to the questions.

MAKING GOOD USE OF STUDY TIME AND SPACE

OBJECTIVES:

To make the best use of study time and space:

the student writes on a calendar the dates school assignments are due.

the student writes down each night the things that must be done in school the next day.

the student schedules a time each day for studying.

the student gets together with other students to study for difficult tests.

the student works on the most difficult homework assignment first.

the student completes one homework assignment before starting another.

the student tells friends not to call during study time.

the student uses what has been learned about the word to write his/her own definition of the word.

the student keeps in a personal dictionary a record of words whose meanings have been learned.

OBJECTIVES:

To learn the spelling of a word:

the student makes sure he/she knows how to pronounce the word before trying to spell it.

the student asks someone or looks in a dictionary when he/she does not know how to pronounce the word.

the student counts the number of syllables he/she hears when pronouncing the word.

the student visualizes how the word is spelled.

the student uses the word in his/her daily writing.

the student compares his/her spelling of the word with the correct spelling of the word.

the student writes on a personal spelling list words he/she has learned to spell.

the student reviews words written on his/her personal spelling list.
