Study Skills & Strategies (3S)
ONLINE STUDY SKILLS CURRICULUM
For Tutors
Tutors can use 3S as a powerful learning tool with high school and college students they tutor. Here are the three components of 3S:
Component A - Assessment
The 3S assessment contains 70 items that require your students to indicate their use of the study skills and strategies that are taught in the curriculum.
A Narrative Report is automatically generated when a student completes an assessment. This report describes each of the study skills and strategies units. For each unit, your students' scores are reported along with one of three instructional recommendations: need instruction, need review, need no instruction. A hyperlink to instruction is provided for any unit for which a student needs review or instruction. Your students may take the assessment any number of times. This allows you to evaluate and monitor their progress and needs. The results for each administration are stored and can be retrieved and printed at any time.
Component B - Instruction
Each of the five units of instruction includes multiple interactive screens. The following learning model is used. First, your students are introduced to the strategy or skill. Second, they are shown examples of how the strategy or skill is used. Third, they practice the use of the strategy or skill. During this practice, your students are required to type responses in text fields that are provided. Pop-up screens provide feedback throughout the practice activities. Each sequence of instruction concludes with an optional application activity in which your students apply the skill or strategy to their actual class work.
Component C - Management
Each assessment and application activity completed by a student is automatically stored in a central file. The management component allows you to easily retrieve and print the assessment reports and completed application activities for your students. You can type comments on the application activities and send the work and comments back to your students. Your students can then make changes and resubmit their work. This back and forth online communication can be continued indefinitely. You can also have your students email assessment reports and application activities to you directly from the site, or print their work and bring it to you at their tutoring sessions.
The Management Component also provides a Diagnostic Profile for each assessment completed by a student. This profile contains a bar graph of your students' scores along with instructional recommendations. It allows you to quickly identify students' instructional needs at a glance. The Diagnostic Profile for each completed assessment is stored and can be retrieved and printed at any time.
