ELL Students

2009-09-14

The number of English-language learners (ELL) has been increasing over recent years.  These students require rich and consistent experiences in developing English oral language.  Here are some suggestions.

  • Help ELL students develop their English vocabulary through visual activities such as creating a picture card file, making picture journals, and developing picture glossaries.
  • Help ELL students sort vocabulary words into categories that are relevant to them.
  • Provide visual representations during instruction.  These representations can include videos, pictures, diagrams, and graphs.
  • Provide ELL students with an English-speaking partner during independent work activities.
Once ELL students develop sufficient English oral vocabulary, emphasis can shift to reading and writing in English.
